1895 Modified Victorian

The  house featured on OHNE was built in 1895, just when electricity and gas lighting were both installed in houses and central heating was coming of age.   As far as we can tell, in more than 100 years, we are only the third family to enjoy this house.  The sketch to your left is from an article about our house in the 1899 issue of Scientific American Building Edition.  The original plan called for light yellow siding with cream trim below and mahogany stained shingles above. Take a look at the floor plans and from there you can visit some of the areas of the current house.

Anna and I were extremely lucky to find our Old Home New England. We had moved into an apartment building that was just two blocks away from the home we would eventually adopt.  I say "adopt" because you can never actually own an Old Home...it owns you.

We used to take long walks in the neighborhood and had commented how much we liked the porch on this really dark looking almost all green house.  Of course, we had looked at a dozen houses and even made a bid on one.  Thank goodness we were 1 hour too late on that first house!

Take a look below to see just some of the great happenings of 1895.   We thought it very interesting to see what was happening while our house was being built.  Don't forget to see the floor plans.

Although there is some expectation amount civilian defense officials that the daily sounding of the air raid alarms will familiarize the citizenry with signals,...not so much optimism is felt from some quarters with regard to the "all clear" signal.
