Almost everyone starts at the local phone directory to find a professional in the trades.  This is probably the worst possible method, but maybe a nice ad does indicate high quality work....right.

As you walk through the Yellow Pages or surf the net, bear some facts in mind.  The trades consists of careers such as electrician, plumber, welder, mason and painter.   Some trades have specialized.  Almost everyone starts with the phonebook when finding a proFor instance, a painter may have decided that wall papering is more satisfying then spreading paint.

Almost all of the trades are either residential (that's for us homeowners) or commercial (for businesses).  It is getting harder to find trades that service the residential community.  That is especially true for old home owners.  We present a very special set of challenges.

Consider these items:

1. Is the company local?  (Easier to schedule, track down)

2. Is this company /person licensed?  Bonded? Insured?

3. Do you get a person or a machine when you call?  This may not be a big deal.  Heh, they are out working and sometimes do not get a chance to call people back until the evening hours.

4. How long does it take to get a response when you leave a message?

5. Does the trade person provide a written estimate for the total job?

6. Most important of all.  Do you have a trusted neighbor who has used this particular company / person before?  Take a look at the work done. Ask if the trade person showed up on time, cleaned up the site after each work day and if they appeared to take pride in their work.

You are about to write some kind of fat checks, but they will be worth it when you engage the right trade person for the job.

Check the status of your MA contractor

Should you "do it yourself?"
