This elaborate 2 1/2 story 16-room brick and shingle Queen Anne style house was built in 1889, for the impressive cost of $11,000, on Mulberry Street - one of Springfield's premier residential neighborhoods.  Mulberry Street is the street made famous in Dr. Seuss's book "And to think I Saw It on Mulberry Street."

It's first owner was Edmund Harvey Smith, president of Hinsdale Smith Company, a tobacco importing and packing company founded by his father.  Born in Feeding Hills in 1851, Mr. Smith joined the family business when he was twenty.  he made annual trips to Europe on business and was an avid collector of oil paintings.  After his death in 1932, the house was vacant for several years, and then used as a boarding house.  Only recently has it become again a single family house.

The house was designed by Eugene C. Gardner, Springfield's most prolific nineteenth century architect, and designer of such notable structures as the Trolley Barn, the Worth Hotel, and the residence of the bishop of The Roman Catholic Diocese of Springfield.  Notable neighbors included members of the Bowles family of the Springfield Newspapers, and the Bliss and Dwight families, bankers and member of two of Springfield's oldest families.
